AMS Bulk Bag News
April 9, 2020
With most of us at home right now, and the warm spring weather inviting us into our own gardens rather than in public parks, countryside or the beach, many of us are looking for garden renovation ideas to improve our outside space. But with the majority of shops and garden centres now closed and with many skilled landscapers self-isolating or choosing to not work, how can you set about making garden improvements right now?
Our 9 garden renovation ideas will not only turn your overgrown jungle into a relaxing haven, but we’ll also show you how to get things done during lockdown.
1. Get your lawn in order
Looking out across your garden, the biggest section to tackle is probably your lawn. A nicely shaped and maintained lawn can make your garden look like a desirable place to be. However, if your lawn is misshapen or in need of attention, you could find yourself hibernating inside until summer’s over.
Tackle your lawn first…think about simply strimming the lawn you already have or why not create a different shape entirely? Your garden need not be conventional, try a circular or even oval lawn shape. If ever there was a time to try something new, it’s now! Check out these circular lawn ideas on Pinterest. If you’re thinking of laying a new lawn from scratch, our top soil alternative is a great base for lawns and available to order online.
2. Maintenance makes a huge difference
You won’t believe the difference completing basic garden maintenance tasks can make! Simply pulling up your weeds, raking fallen leaves, pruning your roses, shaping bushes and cutting back trees can make your garden feel completely different.
You may also, however, be surprised at just how much garden waste this can produce. With the closure of local household recycling centres, a skip bag could be a great and convenient alternative. Simply order an empty skip bag online, fill the skip bag with your garden waste and we’ll collect it for you and dispose of it safely and efficiently.
3. Create some flowerbeds
They say that life begins the day you start a garden and where better to start than with a beautiful flowerbed or two. To start a border flowerbed, you want to aim for a meter or more in depth to allow for smaller plants in the front and taller ones in the back. Begin by removing the grass and tilling the soil in the area you intend to use for your garden. Then, add compost to make the soil more fertile so your flowers will grow better. Next, select and buy some bulbs from an online garden store.
4. Design a garden path
Every journey starts with a path and your garden is no exception. Professional landscapers will tell you that within every good garden, you must have at least one path that leads to another part of the garden. Having a path or a series of paths in your garden draws you in to explore areas that perhaps you would ordinarily overlook. There are many styles of path to choose from including shingle and limestone which are popular choices due to their great drainage and finished look. We can supply a range of aggregates in bulk bags or loose loads using our own fleet of grab lorries and tipper trucks.
5. Grow your own
According to Monty Don “There has never been a time, since the end of the last war, when it is so relevant and important to grow some vegetables, fruit and herbs in your garden.” and we couldn’t agree more. Whether you want to grow some broad beans with the children or you’re looking for a new hobby, growing your own vegetables can be fun, educational and rewarding.
There’s no need to buy seeds online either as you can simply grow vegetables from your own scraps. Find out how here >>
6. Take a seat
With the warmer weather heading our way, and the forced closure of our favourite eateries, dining alfresco in the garden is going to be on most people’s to-do list. If you haven’t already got an outside seating area, now’s the perfect time to create one! You could simply design a dedicated area with a shingle base to separate your table and chairs from the rest of the garden, or you could go one step further and build a decking area on which to sit.
If you are in need of concrete for your deck’s base, Avon Material Supplies can deliver you the ready mixed concrete> you’ll need to get started.
7. Get those boundaries in place
In a small garden, boundary walls or fences and hedges may be the biggest element in view, so it’s really important to get them to look good. You can choose from a selection of different types but there must be consistency between them. You could have fencing along the side of your front garden for example but add a stone wall at the front in a coordinating colour. Or why not paint your fence posts a shade of green to blend in with the rest of the garden? Don’t forget to always check with your neighbours first before doing any boundary work.
8. Add some water to your garden
Water features can bring a relaxing atmosphere to any space and are also known for their ability to increase air quality and humidity and decrease noise pollution by drowning out noise with the sound of running water. Bring some relaxation into your outdoor space with a water feature. Extra: why not create a hidden water feature that draws you into the depths of the garden and away from the open space? Hidden water features can add a new dimension to your garden and create a little haven just for you.
9. Bring the indoors; out
Garden offices were a huge trend in 2019 and they are set to stay for the foreseeable future. With growing numbers of people working from home and increased house prices, more and more people are looking at clever ways to add another room to their home and a garden office is the perfect way to do this.
As with any construction, you’ll need hardcore and concrete for your base and sand for your brick work. We recommend using a classic builder’s sand for this type of project. Read our article on best bagged aggregates for your garden.
Whatever garden renovations you have in mind, AMS Skips Bags operated by Avon Material Supplies can offer you help whilst you’re in lockdown. Our services are still operational although we ask you to book in advance to avoid any disappointment. You can contact the office today on 01202 579579 or fill in the contact form for more information.

We remain operational, however, as a result of current coronavirus pandemic our capacity is limited and some services are taken longer than normal to complete. Currently, some bag collections and aggregate deliveries are taken up to 10 days to carry out.
Empty bag deliveries:
The coronavirus pandemic has also restricted our ability to deliver empty bags and as a result, all empty bags can only be delivered by Royal Mail at a charge of £6.00 per bag. Alternatively, empty bags can be collected free of charge from Canford Recycling Centre.

If you have a spur of the moment DIY or refurbishment project on the go, you may find yourself in possession of excess waste that needs to be disposed of.
Rather than it being an unsightly mess on your premises for weeks on end, or having to make countless trips to the tip, you may opt to have the waste collected.
If this is the case, it’s likely that a 1 day skip hire service has crossed your mind. However, before placing an order it’s worth asking, is this the best solution for your waste disposal needs, and are there any better alternatives? For many smaller waste clearances, skip bag hire can often be an affordable and more effective waste collection solution. Read on for a comparison of both options.
How much waste can be collected?
Skip bag hire
Our skip bag hire service uses bags that measure 90cm x 90cm x 90cm. Each bag can hold up to 1 tonne of waste, which is plenty for most smaller household or garden projects. However, you’re not limited to hiring just one skip bag at a time. We’ll deliver and collect as many skip bags as you think you need!
1 day skip hire
There’s no one definitive answer to this question when it comes to using a skip because the volume of waste a skip can hold is dependent on the types of waste being placed within the container and its size.
Most skip hire companies will commonly offer 6 yard, 8 yard and 12 yard skips, with some skip operators also providing 2 and 4 yard skips. As some guidance, a 6 yard skip tends to hold approximately 60 full bin bags, an 8 yard skip holds 80, and a 12 yard skip holds 120. Of course, the bigger skip you hire, the more expensive the hire rate will be.
What types of waste can be collected?
Skip bag hire
AMS Bulk Bag can collect skip bags that contain any of the following types of waste:
- General / mixed household waste
- Green / garden
- Inert / rubble / brick waste
- Concrete / hardcore
This should pretty much cover any sort of waste that you might expect to create during a simple household / garden project. It is, however, important to note that we cannot collect skips bags that contain any form of liquid, electrical or hazardous waste.
1 day skip hire
The types of waste that you can expect to be able to dispose of with a 1 day skip hire will most likely be the same as the waste streams permitted in our skip bag hire service. This means that whichever option you choose, you shouldn’t be left with waste that you don’t know what to do with.
Please note, some providers may charge additional fees for mattresses, carpets and other bulky items. Our advice is always to check with the hiring company before placing an order, this should help to avoid additional charges being added.
What is the cost?
Skip bag hire
Our skip bags cost from as little as £35.00 for delivery of an empty bag, and collection once you’ve filled it! Alternatively, you can order an empty bag with no collection service for just £6.00. View all of our skip bag hire charges.
1 day skip hire
It may be surprising to hear that most skip companies won’t offer a discount for 1 day skip hire, as the charges are simply based on a two-way journey (no matter how far apart) and the type of material being disposed of.
Depending on what you are looking to dispose of, the hire rates will vary. For example, it is common for mixed waste skips to be more expensive than a skip for one dedicated waste type (such as plasterboard or rubble waste). It’s important to check this with your skip company before you place your order.
How flexible is the service?
Skip bag hire
With skip bag hire, simply let us know when your bag is full, and we’ll send one of our grab lorries out to collect it within 5 working days. There are no minimum or maximum hire terms, so you can keep the bag for as long as you need, whether that’s until you fill it or simply no longer need it! We can also deliver additional skip bags to you if you underestimated the amount of waste you produced. Order an empty bag online.
1 day skip hire
1 day skip hire is exactly what it says it is, so there’s not much flexibility involved. If all your waste is ready to go, a 1 day hire should do the job just fine. However, if there is any chance that you’re going to need the skip for longer than 1 day then it may be worth considering your other options, as you could face additional charges or a price increase if you try and extend the hire length without first agreeing on rates and hire periods with the skip hire provider.
Anything else worth considering?
Skip bag hire
In some cases, due to difficult access or limited space, using a skip just simply isn’t a possibility. Skip bags are a perfect solution for this type of problem as they take up far less space. They also come pre-packed, meaning that they’re easier to transport and store until you’re ready to use them. Not only this, but thanks to the material that skip bags are made of, they are unlikely to mark or damage your driveway.
1 day skip hire
Sometimes, there’s no way around using a skip. If you have large items (such as doors, floorboards etc.) that can’t easily be chopped up, a skip will be your best bet. Before you place your order, it is essential to check that you have plenty of space at your premises for the skip to be able to fit in, and that there is easy access for the truck to be able to deliver it.

Whatever your summer project may be, you’ll need the right equipment to hand to allow for any waste to be easily removed.
What is a skip bag?
Skip bags, or bulk bags as they are sometimes known, are a convenient and lightweight alternative to traditional metal skips, which make small disposals much easier and practical.
The durable bags we use measure at 90cmx90cmx90cm, and are made from woven polypropylene, making them strong enough to be able to carry up to a single tonne of waste.
Easy skip bags are delivered flat packed, making them simple to store around the house, in a garage or a vehicle until required.
If you are wondering whether a traditional skip or skip bag service would be most suitable for your renovation, check out our article which outlines the differences between mini skips and skip bags Bournemouth.

How to reuse your aggregate bag as a skip bag
Have you recently ordered a bulk bag of aggregates? Whether it was some topsoil to revamp your garden or shingle for your driveway, it’s useful to know that you can reuse your empty bulk bag as a skip bag, once you’ve unloaded the materials it contained.
Save yourself time and money and let us collect your waste once you’re finished
Reusing your bulk bag for waste disposal
We are often asked ‘can aggregate bags be reused as skips bags?’, the answer’s yes and the process is simple, just;
- Order your aggregates
- Empty your aggregates
- Fill your empty bag with waste
- Call us and we’ll collect it!
Overall I am very impressed with both the product and service provided and would willingly give my recommendation. – Martin, Customer of AMS Bulk Bag
How do I keep my bulk bag in a suitable condition to reuse it?
We are only able to collect waste if it’s placed in a bulk bag that is safe, undamaged and strong enough to be picked up by one of our grab lorries. For this reason, we advise that you don’t place any sharp items in the bag, or drag your bag across stones or concrete as this can damage or rip the bag.
We also request you don’t overfill the bulk bag due to the weight considerations we adhere to, and the fact that waste not fully contained within the bag raises safety concerns, which may prevent our team from being able to collect and transport your filled skip bag.
What types of waste can you collect?
If you choose to reuse your aggregate bag as a skip bag, it can be filled with any of the following waste types:
If you’re unsure whether the type of waste you want to skip can be placed in our bulk bags, please get in touch with our team who will be more than happy to help.
How much does it cost to be collected?
Skip bag collections in the BH postcode area start from just £35.00, you can see all our prices here. To save money, we recommend you segregate your waste into the different streams we can collect because it’s cheaper to dispose of single types of waste, such as garden, plasterboard, inert etc.
Segregated waste will save you money, so skip sensibly.
My waste won’t fit in a skip bag…
No problem! We have many other waste collection options if you have too much waste for a skip bag.
For example, you could hire a skip or book a grab lorry collection from our parent company Avon Material Supplies. To discuss the range of waste collection services Avon Material Supplies, please call their friendly team on 01202 579579.

Good quality topsoil gets the job done properly
If you’re looking to landscape your garden or just want to smarten it up for summer, then you are likely to be looking for some good quality topsoil to ensure the job gets done properly and has the desired outcome.
To hopefully make your life a little easier and to save you time, below we have answered some of the more common questions people ask AMS Bulk Bag when looking to buy good quality topsoil.
Is your manufactured soil a suitable alternative to more expensive topsoil?
The recycled, substitute topsoil we sell to our customers is manufactured locally by Commercial Recycling using their specialist plant machinery and processes, which are also used to create a range of popular construction aggregates.
Obviously, we are biased, but we do genuinely believe our topsoil is one the best locally and this is an opinion shared by many top landscaping firms in Dorset and Hampshire. Businesses who regularly use the topsoil alternative that is manufactured by Commercial Recycling include:
“Thank you to all at AMS, you have delivered an exemplary service for our Farmhouse Inn job in Southampton. Without your assistance we would not be where we are today, many thanks to all concerned and involved.” Lester Haworth, Owner at Landscape 2000.
What are the benefits of ordering topsoil in bags over buying it loose?
Buying topsoil loose can be a messy process, when its tipped off by a lorry, it can spread out over a relatively large area which can be a nuisance and become sodden in wet weather.
Buying topsoil in bags instead of as a loose load can provide a range of benefits, with the most popular being:
- Your bulk bag of topsoil is able to be dropped in more challenging locations than a tipped loose load. For example, a skip bag filled with aggregates can easily be placed within the boundaries of a garden or in the corner of a driveway.
- There’s no unnecessary mess as the topsoil will stay contained in the sturdy bag.
- Once emptied you’ll be able to re-use your bag time and time again, which is especially useful if you have garden waste that you need to transport for disposal to your local recycling centre.
- If your bag remains in a suitable condition you could re-use it for our skip bag waste collection services.
“I would not hesitate to recommend the manufactured topsoil product, very happy customer and an excellent delivery service, thank you.” – Alma, customer of AMS Bulk Bag
What is your manufactured topsoil ideal for?
Our topsoil alternative is generally used by homeowners, landscapers and businesses within the following tasks:
Its good to know… due to the screening process, the soil we deliver is available in either 10mm or 20mm, which means there is no large lumps of soil or stones within the mix.
How big are the bags of topsoil you sell and what amount of material should I expect?
Our 90x90x90cm sturdy bulk bags will hold 850-950 kg of topsoil, which is just less than 1 tonne.
Why AMS Bulk Bag?
We’ve built up a great reputation within the BH postcode area and are now trusted by many professionals in and around Bournemouth and Poole for their projects.
